Overdose Preparedness In Schools = YOUNG LIVES SAVED
In 2021, fentanyls were identified in 77.14% of adolescent overdose deaths*. Opioid overdoses continue to rise, especially among young people.
Fentanyl overdoses are becoming a significant risk on college and university campuses. Many campus security teams are getting trained in naloxone administration and being equipped with Naloxone Nasal Spray to respond in time. AED cabinets are also being upgraded to include Narcan, further strengthening public health measures on campus.
We know that the health and safety of your students and staff are your top priority. As the threat of opioid and fentanyl overdoses continues to rise in educational settings, having naloxone (Narcan) readily available is crucial. Quick naloxone administration can be the difference between life and death during an overdose emergency.
In overdose emergencies, every second counts. NaloxKit ensures that naloxone is always accessible, providing the reliable tools you need for a fast and effective response.
Getting naloxone and training staff are solid first steps.
Visibility and accessibility will maximize the impact on saving lives.
Dr. Rahul Gupta, director of White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy and Miguel Cardona, US Secretary of Education, said every school in the United States should carry naloxone.
They added, “faculty and students alike should be prepared to use the nasal spray to stop an overdose. We want to share resources that could help your school and community prevent drug use before it begins and keep students alive long enough to get the help they need in the event of an overdose.” - Gupta and Cardona wrote.
States Where Schools Are Allowed or Required to Have Naloxone
Many states have laws that clearly state schools or their employees may store, possess, or administer naloxone, the opioid reversal drug. A smaller group of states require that some subset of schools have naloxone.
The American Medical Association Endorses Co-Location of Naloxone and AED installations.
By making naloxone more accessible, particularly where AEDs are located in public spaces, we can help prevent more opioid overdoses and save lives.” said Dr. Mukkamala.
